Yes, it makes perfect sense to use Google Voice as a family number. You can use Google Voice as your family number, your business number, your Little League number, your friends number, etc… The convenience of Google Voice and 1 phone number to give to everyone is its best feature.
I would recommend setting up and organizing your contacts with Google Contacts. Then, use Google Voice’s custom calling settings to setup specific rules for each one of your contacts or groups. Google Voice will allow you to add up to 5 phone numbers and setup specific rules for each one of your groups.
I have setup Google Contacts into several different groups:
When one of my friends calls me, Google Voice applies the custom routing that I have setup in my Google Voice settings and then if I don’t answer the call, the caller will get the ever-so-annoying custom greeting that pretends that I am answering. Sometimes I change this greeting to keep them off guard. (Muuhahaha evil laugh)
Another benefit of managing your Google Contacts is that it makes it SUPER simple to send out a group text message to an entire group of contacts. Last year, when coaching my son’s Little League Baseball team, it was so easy to send out a text to the group of parents by just typing in the Group Name after clicking on text message in Google Voice. I could even record a custom greeting to let them know if they call me that practice has been cancelled, although I might recommend PhoneVite if you need something like this.
Keep your home phone, it is probably bundled with your internet service and is usually a pretty good value. You never know when you may need it in an emergency and the home phone gives the exact E911 physical address. Your cell phone may or may not be accurate enough for an emergency responder to find your exact location.
If there is a contact that will regularly want to speak with your wife, then setup a specific rule for that contact to just ring your wife’s cell phone. If you get a call from a debt collector (you should get those debts taken care of) then you can actually block that caller and they will hear a recording that the number is no longer in service.
Google Voice allows you to manage your calls and gives you so much control over how accessible you are. It makes it very simple to contact a group of people and I have found it be very useful in my busy life.
